Society of General Internal Medicine Names New President and Council Members
The Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM) has announced that Jean S. Kutner, MD, MSPH
will be inducted as the 43rd president of SGIM on May 8, 2020. Dr. Kutner will serve a one-year term as president but will be on the Council as an officer for a three-year term.
Jean S. Kutner, MD, MSPH
Dr. Jean Kutner serves as the inaugural Chief Medical Officer of University of Colorado Hospital and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs. Her personal mission is to enhance care and quality of life for people with serious illness and their family caregivers. Dr. Kutner’s professional career has been devoted to achieving her mission’s goals through evidence generation, implementation of evidence into practice, clinical program development, education, mentorship and local and national leadership.
The Society has also announced the recent election of new Council officers and members-at-large who will begin their three-year terms (2020-2023) as of May 8, 2020. They are:
President Elect: Monica L. Lypson, MD, MHPE
Professor, Medicine; The George Washington University School of Medical and Health Sciences
Dr. Lypson serves as a professor, Vice-Chair of Medicine, Division Director of General Internal Medicine at The George Washington University School of Medical and Health Sciences. Her work focuses on innovations and improvements in health professions education and assessment, health equity, workforce diversity, faculty development, medical care delivery, and provider communication skills. Dr. Lypson most recently served as Director for Medical and Dental Education for the Veterans Health Administration, where she oversaw undergraduate and graduate medical education across the nation within the Department of Veteran Affairs.
Secretary - Elect: Secretary Elect: Gail Daumit, MD, MHS
Samsung Professor of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School
Dr. Daumit is Samsung Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and directs the Johns Hopkins ALACRITY Center for Health and Longevity in Mental Illness. Her work focuses on improving physical health and decreasing premature mortality in populations with serious mental illness using health services research, clinical trials, and implementation science methods. Her Johns Hopkins roles include leading programs to advance research career development for junior faculty and serving as the Vice Chair for Clinical and Translational Research in the Department of Medicine.
Council Members-At-Large:
Margaret Lo, MD Professor of Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine Department of Medicine, Division of Internal Medicine
Dr. Lo is Professor of Medicine at the University of Florida College of Medicine and Ambulatory Care Staff Physician at the Malcolm Randall VAMC in Gainesville, FL. She serves as the Primary Care director and Associate Program Director of the UF Internal Medicine Residency program. Her professional career as a clinician educator has championed for innovations in ambulatory education, chronic disease education, physician resiliency in medicine, and GIM faculty recruitment, retention and career development.
Eleanor (Bimla) Schwarz, MD, MS Professor, Internal Medicine; The University of California, Davis, School of Medicine and Center for Healthcare Research and Policy. Dr. Schwarz serves as a professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine and directs the Quality, Safety and Comparative Effectiveness Research Training in Primary Care Fellowship program. Her work focuses on improving population health outcomes, with an emphasis on reproductive health and underserved communities. Dr. Schwarz has previously worked closely with the US Department of Veterans Affairs and California’s Department of Health Care Services’ Office of Family Planning.
