In the age of office visits, telemedicine encounters, and tightly scheduled appointment slots, physicians are missing out on both the human connection and the social context that the traditional house call once provided. In this salient piece, Kaleka reminds us that the stories our patients tell, if we allow them to, are windows into their personhood. They are an opportunity for building alliance and understanding with the people who place their trust in us. However, putting all doctoring and diagnostics aside, they are also valid and valuable conversations in and of themselves.
