Task Forces and Work Groups

Task Forces and Workgroups also play vital roles in fulfilling the Society's mission and supporting its members.

  1. TASK FORCES: conduct substantive, on-going Council initiatives that intersect with at least two core missions and have representation from the relevant core mission committees. All task forces, like committees, report to Council.

    Academic Hospitalist
    Contact: Vikas Parekh, MD
                    Bradley Sharpe, MD
Created in response to the needs of hospitalists already within the Society and those who are looking for expanded academic opportunities, the task force is committed to supporting the community of scholars dedicated to the care of hospitalized patients. By providing the necessary tools to succeed in academia, the Academic Hospitalist Task Force hopes to develop the essential space and resources within SGIM for the creation of a professional home for hospitalists.

    Disparities
    Contact: Tracie Collins, MD, MPH
                    Judith Long, MD
The SGIM Task Force on Health Disparities provides SGIM with the opportunity to examine the specific role the organization can play in eliminating health disparities by focusing on its strengths as an organization concerned with research, education, and patient care in primary care internal medicine.  In 2008, the Task Force created A Train the Trainer Guide to assist in teaching disparities in the clinical setting, beyond the clinical setting, and in community involvement and social justice.  For more information on the Disparities Education project, click HERE.

    EBM

The Society of General Internal Medicine has fostered the growth of the Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) movement through workshops at its national and regional meetings and through the support of interest groups and task forces related to EBM.  To find our more about the current activities of the committee please visit their extensive website.  The EBM TF is looking for new members interested in advancing the field of EBM. We are seeking nominations for 3 new candidates to serve on the TF from May 2010 - May 2013. If you are interested in joining the TF, please see the EBM web page for instructions on how to submit your name for consideration.

    Geriatrics
    Contact: Hollis Day, MD, MS
                    Elizabeth Eckstrom, MD, MPH

    Women's Health
Contact:  Eleanor Bimla Schwarz, MD, MS
The Women's Health task force serves as a resource for members interested in promoting women's health and facilitates communication between four interest groups related to women's health. It enables SGIM members to collaborate, network, promote faculty development, provide educational opportunities, and work to improve women's health.  Each year the task force coordinates for the Annual Meeting the Distinguished Professor of Women's Health and the Women's Health abstract and workshop awards.

  2. WORK GROUPS: substantive but time-limited Council initiatives that intersect primarily with one core mission and include representation from relevant core mission committee. Work groups report to the relevant committee chair and do not have a Council liaison.

    VA
    Contact: Jeff Whittle, MD, MPH

The VA Work Group fosters communication and promotion of veteran issues and related activities throughout the SGIM membership.  This includes sponsorship of events at the Annual Meeting and regional meetings throughout the year, publication of articles in Forum and JGIM supplements and promotion of key topics and resources to SGIM members with and without VA affiliations.

    PCMH Workgroup
