Awards and Grants

SGIM Awards provide well-deserved national recognition for exceptional achievements and innovations in the health care profession as well as contributions to the Society.


  • Robert J. Glaser Award For outstanding contributions to research, education, or both in generalism in medicine.  
  • Elnora M. Rhodes SGIM Service Award For outstanding service to SGIM and its mission of promoting patient care, research, and education in primary care medicine.  
  • Herbert W. Nickens Award For outstanding achievements in promoting minority health and minority representation in medicine. 
  • David R. Calkins Award For an outstanding commitment to advocacy on behalf of SGIM.
  • ACGIM Chief’s Recognition Award For excellence in Division leadership.  
     
  • Research Awards
    • John M. Eisenberg National Award for Career Achievement in Research The purpose of this award is to recognize an individual whose lifetime research contributions have had a national impact. 
    • Outstanding Junior Investigator of the Year Given to recognize a junior investigator’s career achievement in research. The general criterion for the award is outstanding accomplishment in research. 
    • Best Research Paper of the Year Given to an individual for the best published research paper of the year. 
    • Mid-Career Research And Mentorship Award This award is intended to recognize the mentoring activities of general medicine investigators. 
       
  • Clinician-Educator Awards Recognize outstanding clinician-educators whose scholarly contributions have had a national impact on the art and science of medicine and medical education:
    • National Award for Career Achievements in Medical Education
    • National Award for Scholarship in Medical Education
    • National Award for Mid-Career Education Mentorship

     
  • Clinical Practice Awards
    • Clinical Practice Innovation Award 

Grants

SGIM grants support individuals and programs that strive to improve patient care, teaching, and research.

  • Mary O'Flaherty Horn Award For an outstanding clinician educator dedicated to patient care, education and caring for the underserved and who chooses to work part-time to balance personal and professional roles.  This award is offered every 3 years.  Next call for this award will be in 2011. 
  • T. Franklin Williams Scholars Award is intended to support the professional development of junior physician-scientists in divisions of General Internal Medicine who are conducting research that seeks to improve the understanding of important health care problems of older adults.
  • Research and Education Mentorship Awards support longitudinal relationships between mentors and mentees who live at some distance from one another. Due to funding this award is not being offered this year.
  • Lawrence S. Linn Awards Provides grants to up to three young investigators to study or improve the quality of life for persons with AIS or HIV infection.  This award may not be given in 2010.
  • Founders Award - provides up to $20,000 annually toward research support by a junior investigator on a select topic each year.  Next call for this award will be in 2011. 
  • UpToDate® Subscription Grant - This program offers a donated one-year subscription of UpToDate® in Internal Medicine on Internet and CD-ROM to each of twenty individuals who work in medically underserved areas, and who could benefit from access to UpToDat®e, but who do not currently have funding to subscribe.

 

 Presentation Awards

  • Mack Lipkin Sr. Associate Member Awards: Given to up to three resident, student, or fellow members for outstanding scientific presentation at the Annual Meeting.  
  • Milton W. Hamolsky Awards: Given to up to three junior faculty individuals for outstanding scientific presentation at the Annual Meeting.
  • Clinical Vignette Award: For the top-rated clinical vignette at the National Annual Meeting.
