Date  03 May 2001

Summary

This workshop, given in at the 2001 SGIM Annual Meeting, included both didactic and "hands on" approaches to assessment of older patients in the busy office practice. The didactic portion of the workshop described time-efficient, up-to-date and cost-effective assessment instruments and evidence to support their effectiveness. Also discussed were approaches to office-based assessment and the evidence to support these approaches including 1) an in-office screen, 2) assessment over time, and 3) use of a pre-office visit survey. The second part of the workshop was case-based, small group sessions allowing the opportunity for hands-on practice with instruments and opportunity to discuss implementation at home institutions. Included below are handouts to facilitate teaching trainees and colleagues about these geriatric problems.
