MembershipSGIM MembershipJoin online or download a membership application (pdf) and fax it to SGIM at (202) 202-887-5405 Since the organization’s inception in 1978 as the Society for Research and Education in Primary Care Internal Medicine, SGIM has strived to advance and promote the field of academic general internal medicine. SGIM members conduct cutting edge research and teach medical students, residents, and fellows how to care for adult patients as internal medicine providers across the spectrum of care centers in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Additionally, our community acts as the research and clinical practice hub in internal medicine including preventative measures and treatment services for patients. Simply put, SGIM has been the home for academic internal medicine providers interested in research, education and clinical practice for over three decades. As a member of the SGIM, you have full access to our member benefits and networking opportunities. These tools will enable you to excel in the practice of academic general internal medicine and your career regardless of your experience level. As you explore the many facets of being a SGIM member, you will find that the programs and activities of SGIM are innovative and a reflection of the shared interests and needs of its members.

CommunitySGIM is the home of academic internal medicine for primary care and general internal medicine physicians. As a new member you have gained access to our international network of clinicians, researchers, hospitalists and educators largely based in educational and community health centers across the US and 10 other countries. These networking opportunities extend from our national taskforces to regional projects and even personal mentorships. Individuals can be connected to like-minded professionals with the similar professional goals and motivations in whatever capacity works best for you.
Career ManagementRegardless of your current career trajectory, SGIM provides you with the means to meet and exceed your aspirations. Members will build and maintain meaningful career through the use of both regional and national mentorship programs, access to article publication, awards, and CME opportunities.

Access to MeetingsA core goal of SGIM is to foster professional interaction among leading academic researchers and general internists. Whether in-person or online, SGIM has the mechanism for you to connect with other professionals within your field including national meetings, regional meetings, and online community tools. No matter the format or topic, these meetings are peer driven and membership helps dictate each meeting; insuring the interests and best practices of general internists. Continuing Medical Education credit (CME) is usually available for most sessions.
PublicationsSGIM has a variety of publications which promote dialogue and interaction between members and the scientific community. The Society also publishes occasional white papers and press releases to alert the medical community and press to SGIM’s position on a variety of current issues.
AdvocacySince our first meeting in 1978, SGIM has been a politically engaged organization focusing on educating and enabling our membership to advocate on the behalf of general internal medicine. SGIM’s non-partisan work involves promoting the overall advancement of primary care workers and general internal medicine including insuring funding opportunities for our membership.
As you become involved with the Society, you will quickly understand that this community’s true lifeblood is our membership and their commitment to research and providing patients with the best care available.
