2010 Award Winners The Society of General Internal Medicine presented numerous awards and grants during their Annual Scientific Meeting, held April 28–May 1, 2010 at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis, MN. SGIM is proud and pleased to announce the recipients by category:
Recognition Awards
| The Robert J. Glaser Award – Presented to William M. Tierney, MD (Indiana University School of Medicine) for outstanding contributions to research, education, or both in generalism in medicine. The award is supported by grants from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, the Commonwealth Fund, and individual contributors. |

| Elnora M. Rhodes Service Award – Presented to Laura L. Sessums, JD, MD (Walter Reed Army Medical Center) for outstanding service to SGIM and its mission of promoting patient care, research, and education in general internal medicine. |

| Herbert W. Nickens Award – Presented to Said A. Ibrahim, MD, MPH (University of Pittsburgh Healthcare System) for a demonstrated commitment to cultural diversity in medicine. |

| David Calkins Award in Health Policy Advocacy – Presented to Harry P. Selker, MD, MSPH (Tufts Medical Center) in recognition of his extraordinary commitment to advocating on behalf of SGIM. |

| Clinical Practice Innovation Award – Presented to the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center. This award recognizes the organization and leadership that have developed innovative ways to engage and teach residents and/or practicing physicians the principles and implementation of practice improvement in ambulatory and/or hospital inpatient clinical practice. |

| ACGIM Chiefs Recognition Award – Presented to Russell S. Phillips, MD (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center). This award is given annually to the general internal medicine Division Chief who most represents excellence in Division leadership. |
 |
| Lawrence S. Linn Award: Presented to E. Jennifer Edelman, MD (RWJ Clinical Scholars Program - Yale University). This award is presented to young investigators to study or improve the quality of life for persons with AIDS or HIV infection. |

| SGIM/ACGIM/ASP T. Franklin Williams Scholars’ Award – Presented to Alexander K. Smith, MD, MS, MPH (University of California, San Francisco). This award supports the professional development of junior physician-scientists in divisions of General Internal Medicine who conduct research seeking to improve our understanding of important health care problems of older adults or of strategies to improve the care of older adults. This award is supported by a generous grant from the Atlantic Philanthropies and the John A. Hartford Foundation through the Association of Specialty Professors. |

| John M. Eisenberg National Award for Career Achievement in Research – Presented to David A. Asch, MD, MBA (University of Pennsylvania) in recognition of a senior SGIM member whose innovative research has changed the way we care for patients, the way we conduct research, or the way we educate our students. SGIM member contributions and the Hess Foundation support this award. |

| Mid-Career Research and Mentorship Award – Presented to Joshua P. Metlay, MD, PhD (University of Pennsylvania) in recognition of mentoring activities as a general internal medicine investigator. |

| Best Published Research Paper – Presented to Kevin Volpp, MD, PhD (University of Pennsylvania) in recognition of his paper, “A Randomized, Controlled Trial of Financial Incentives for Smoking Cessation,” which has made a significant contribution to generalist research. |

| Outstanding Junior Investigator – Presented to Allison B. Rosen, MD, MPH, ScD (University of Michigan) and Rachel M. Werner, MD, PhD (University of Pennsylvania) for early career achievements and overall body of work that has made a national impact on generalist research. |

| National Award for Career Achievements in Medical Education – Presented to Molly Cooke, MD (University of California, San Francisco) for a lifetime of contributions to medical education. |

| National Award for Scholarship in Medical Education – Presented to Jeanne M. Farnan, MD, MHPE (University of Chicago) for her individual contributions to medical education in one or more of the following categories: Scholarship of Integration, Scholarship in Educational Methods and Teaching, and Scholarship in Clinical Practice. |

| Mid-Career Mentorship in Education Award – Presented to Joseph Cofrancesco, MD, MPH (Johns Hopkins University). This award recognizes the mentoring activities of general medicine educators who are actively engaged in education research and mentorship of junior clinician educators. |

Presentation Awards
2010 Women’s Health Presentation Awards are given to the highest-rated women’s health-based oral and poster abstracts presented at the SGIM 33rd Annual Meeting. The awards are part of the Women’s Health Distinguished Professor Program. The award winners for 2010 are:
- Sonya Borrero, MD, MS (University of Pittsburgh), “Racial Variation in Tubal Sterilization Rates: The Role of Patient-level Factors”
- Wendy Bennett, MD, MPH (Johns Hopkins University), “Barriers to Follow-up care in Women with Recent Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Qualitative Study”
- Hilary Tindle, MD (Harvard Medical School), “Is Smoking a Coronary Heart Disease Risk Equivalent in Post Menopausal Women?”
Mack Lipkin, Sr. Associate Member Awards are presented to the scientific presentations considered most outstanding by students, residents and fellows during the SGIM 33rd Annual Meeting. Awards are made based on participant evaluations of the presentations and are endowed by the Zlinkoff Fund for Medical Education. The award winners for 2010 are:
- Matthew O'Brien, MD, MSc (University of Pennsylvania), “Community Health Workers and Cervical Cancer Prevention in Hispanic Women”
- Asaf Bitton, MD (Brigham and Women’s Hospital), “Changes in Addressing Tobacco Use by U.S. Physicians at Ambulatory Visits, 2005-2007”

Milton W. Hamolsky Junior Faculty Awards are presented to the scientific presentations considered most outstanding by junior faculty during the SGIM 33rd annual meeting. Awards are made based on participant evaluations of the presentations and are endowed by the Zlinkoff Fund for Medical Education. The award winners for 2010 are:
- Thad Abrams, MD, MS (University of Iowa and VA Medical Center), “Does Geographical Isolation Impact the Risk of Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease Related Mortality?”
- Daren R. Anderson, MD, (Yale University), “Managing the Space Between Visits: Telephonic Disease Management for Underserved Patients with Diabetes”
- Jason P. Block, MD (Brigham and Women’s Hospital), “Proximity to Restaurants and Food Stores and Body Mass Index in the Framingham Offspring Cohort”
The David E. Rogers Junior Faculty Education Awards are given to junior faculty for workshops judged the most outstanding among those presented at the 2010 Annual Meeting. To be eligible, the workshop coordinator must be an SGIM member and faculty at the instructor or assistant professor level at the time of the 2010 Annual Meeting. Attendance (≥ 20) and participant evaluations (≥ 60%) are considered in determining the recipients. The three 2010 awards are presented to:
- Kathleen Finn, MD, MPhil; Inpatient Associate Program Director – Clinician Educator, Massachusetts General Hospital - Practice Drills and Exercises for Clinical Teachers
- Carla Spagnoletti, MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine -Workshop Preparation and Presentation at a Regional or National Meeting: A Valuable Form of Scholarship
- Mary Thorndike, MD; Instructor in Medicine, Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women’s Hospital -Beyond the Hospital and the Classroom: Art Museums as a Site for Medical Education
